Does discord remove metadata from images?

Hey everyone,

I was hoping someone here could clarify something for me. I’m planning to share some photos from a recent meetup on a public Discord server, but I’m a little paranoid about privacy.

I know some social media sites automatically strip EXIF data (like GPS location, camera model, time taken, etc.) when you upload, but I’ve heard conflicting things about Discord. Some people say it scrubs everything, but others say it depends on how you send the file (like if it’s mobile vs. desktop or if you send it as a file vs. an image).

Does anyone know for sure if Discord removes this info automatically? Or should I be running my photos through a metadata remover tool before I post them just to be safe?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Yo, disc strips most metadata but not all. If you’re concerned and want to be safe, use something like this: https://exifcleaner.com/

Or, ExifTool if you’re comfortable with command line.

Relevant tweet from Discord:

Heya! We do strip some data (EXIF geocoding data mostly) and run the images through our resizing player to hide your IP!

I think almost all platforms and devices strip META data now don’t they? Apple was the first major player who started doing it, right? Since then it’s been a waterfall and now everyone does it.

yes they do remove all location and related data from images you upload

Oddly enough, I can confirm with 100% certainty that they do remove meta data because of a legal case I was involved with which had this exact topic involved in the case. They 100% remove any and all meta data.

it removes everything. you can test it yourself, take an image with meta data and upload it to discord. then download that pic and examine the meta data. you’ll have your answer on which if any data is still there.

far as I know, all that image info iis removed upon upload. Discord’s support articles and FAQs say the same thing.

you should get in the habit of stripping meta data yourself from all your images.

first of all, it reduces their size by a lot. and second, why depend on a social media platform to remove the metadata for you when you can delete iot all yourself?

I use this thing and its bad ass, been using it for like 10 years: Client Challenge

here’s a free browser based one I use ( Metadata Remover ), works good. although I may give that one posted above a shot, would be kind of nice to have a little app running on my desktop that’s always ready to go

I actually use that stripper that @Trigger_Control posted to wipe metadata out of my pictures. Like someone else said, you’d seriously be blown away by how much size comes off an image when you strip all metadata and EXIF data. Like, half ther image size is nothing but data, it’s disgusting.

Don’t all social media platforms remove image meta information automatically? I think that is just basic protocol these days, right?

Test it out yourself, upload a pic with lots of meta data to discord and then download the picture back to your computer and examine to see exactly what they do and do not remove.

Use a site like this: View Metadata

Upload a picture to Discord then download it and run it through the app, see what type of meta data info is attached to your image.
